One of John's passions was music which he always said brought him much enjoyment over the years and the friendship of many. He played mainly banjo, but was also skilled on guitar and mandolin. He had a habit of collecting them as well - when we moved house one of the removal men was rather glad that it was banjos, rather than pianos. For a time he was a professional musician but even when he exchanged music for surveying, he continued to play both for fun and relaxation.
